The Rising Threat of Terrorism in Punjab

Islamabad: Recent investigations have revealed a troubling collaboration between Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and the ISI, aimed at instigating terror in Punjab and its neighboring regions. While Punjab police focus on combating drug trafficking and drone activities, there are growing concerns about an impending large-scale recruitment initiative.

The ISI is making concerted efforts to rejuvenate the Khalistan movement in Punjab, employing various strategies to achieve its goals. Numerous terrorist organizations are affiliated with this movement, including BKI, Khalistan Zindabad Force, Khalistan Liberation Army, and Khalistan Tiger Force, among others.

In total, there are 41 groups involved, with some advocating for the cause peacefully while others resort to violence. To streamline efforts, the ISI has decided to consolidate these factions under the leadership of BKI, allowing it to spearhead the initiative.

Intelligence Bureau officials have expressed concerns that having multiple factions could complicate recruitment efforts, potentially confusing prospective members and discouraging them from joining any group.

BKI was selected for this pivotal role due to its significant influence and robust network both in Punjab and internationally. Its close ties with gangster networks are vital for the Khalistan movement, as these gangsters provide financial support and potential recruits.

Over the years, BKI has effectively collaborated with gangsters, utilizing their resources to fund operations and execute terror attacks.

Recently, with ISI's assistance, BKI has ramped up drone operations targeting Punjab, aiming to smuggle drugs and weapons. Profits from the drug trade are intended to finance the movement.

Officials indicate that plans for a large recruitment drive have been in development for some time. However, the initiative has faced obstacles, as many in Punjab do not resonate with the movement's ideology. Even older generations, weary from the violence of the 1980s, have cautioned their children against getting involved.

BKI believes that if ideological recruitment fails, financial incentives or drug-related lures may be effective. This has led to an increased focus on advanced drone technology for smuggling operations. Some drones have been reported to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to evade detection and destruction.

With BKI now at the forefront, both Punjab police and intelligence agencies are under significant pressure. State and central agencies are collaborating closely to counter this emerging threat.

Looking ahead, officials anticipate a busy period as ISI intensifies its efforts regarding the Khalistan movement. The way BKI is mobilizing its resources across Pakistan, Canada, Punjab, Germany, and the UK raises alarms for security agencies. Notably, BKI is designated as a banned organization in Canada, India, the European Union, Japan, Malaysia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
